Roanoke VA Flip House Update: Fixing the Home with a Million Steps!

We are back at our latest renovation project—the Roanoke flip house affectionately known as the “home with a million steps” [0:1.4]! We recently asked for your advice on how to handle this property [0:1.4], and after receiving over 100 comments, we have officially made some big decisions [0:1.7, 0:1.8].

Check out the full video update below to see how the demolition is progressing and help us solve our next round of construction dilemmas!

Roanoke VA Flip House Update!

🛠️ Big Renovation Choices: Windows & Flooring Fixed!

First up, the windows [0:1.7]. Every single comment we received said to rip out the old ones and start fresh [0:1.7, 0:1.8]. We are officially moving forward with a full $8,000 window replacement job [0:1.9]. It is a big upfront investment, but it will make the property ten times more energy-efficient and look incredibly sharp [0:1.9, 0:1.10].

We also had to rethink our strategy for the floors [0:1.33]. Originally, our goal was to completely refinish the historic hardwood flooring throughout the home [0:1.34]. However, upon closer inspection, the wood was simply too damaged to save [0:1.34, 0:1.35].

Instead, we are pivoting to a high-quality split strategy [0:1.35, 0:1.36]:

  • Main Living Spaces: We are laying down durable, modern Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) through the dining room, hallway, bathroom, pantry, and kitchen area [0:1.36, 0:1.37].
  • Bedrooms: We are putting brand new, clean carpet in all three bedrooms to keep the spaces cozy and budget-friendly [0:1.37, 0:1.38, 0:1.39].

Additionally, we are choosing to preserve a bit of the historic charm by keeping and painting the original built-in pantry shelves instead of tearing them out for generic wire racking [0:1.41, 0:1.42, 0:1.43].

❓ We Need Your Help: Shower Windows & A Hidden Alleyway?

Now that the old cast iron tub is out, we have run into a few new structural dilemmas and we need your feedback in the comments [0:1.11, 0:1.12]!

🚿 The Bathroom Window Dilemma

Right now, there is a window sitting right in the middle of where our new tub and shower tile surround needs to go [0:1.12, 0:1.13]. Do we keep a window in the shower, or do we tear it out completely [0:1.13, 0:1.14]? Removing it means we have to seal it up with new OSB and perfectly match the gray vinyl siding on the home’s exterior so it looks like it was never there [0:1.14, 0:1.15, 0:1.16]. What would you prefer to see in a finished home [0:1.18]?

🚗 The Secret Back Alley Driveway

The front of this house is incredibly steep and features a long walk up the steps [0:1.29]. However, we just discovered a dedicated gravel alleyway running directly behind the back fence [0:1.26, 0:1.27]! If we tear down a section of the fence, we could build a private rear driveway [0:1.28]. Would future buyers prefer parking in the back and walking in off the gravel alley, or parking out front at the bottom of the steps [0:1.31]?
